Akshibhyam te sukta

Akshibhyam te Remove the disease

Here we will study the Hindu concept of Life. Akshibhyam te sukta from Atharvana veda suggests chanting of Vedic suktas to cure one’s disease. However, Hindu scriptures also say that one should not stop taking medicines till the end. This system prevails in general practice also. It is true that Hindus worship Gods and conduct specific rituals / pujas to get rid of diseases or troubles in addition to administration of disease specific medications to the patient. This aspect is told in our Shastras as follows:

यावत्कंठ गताः प्राणाः यावन्नश्यति चॆंद्रियं

तावच्चिकत्सा कर्तव्या कालस्य कुटिला गतिः

yAvatkaMTh gatAH prANAH yAvannaSyati cEMdriyaM

tAvaccikatsA kartavyA kAlasy kuTilA gatiH

Meaning: Who knows what the wish of the Almighty God is? And who knows what is the fate of this patient which is dependent on his past karmas ( result of past sins and good deeds )? So we have to do all to save the life of a patient by administering relevant medicines as long as his organs are working. And as long as he is alive.

The above hymn says that we may worship the Gods for saving our lives from a disease but at the same time we should not ignore treatment to the patient.

Actually there is a strong prejudice among the learned in India about the contents of Atharvana Ved. Many think that Atharvana ved teaches about occult practices, prescribes Amulets and Chasms for diseases. But truth is different. I have read this Ved several times. I found nothing of that sort. It is true that there are slokas or hymns to be chanted to please Gods for alleviation of human problems and curing of diseases. But the same Ved prescribes drugs for specific diseases. Great Sages of Ayurveda, Vedic Doctors Charvaka and Sushruta both tell us that they have learnt so much from Atharvana ved.
