Indian National Congress

The Congress party in 1885 christened itself as a party of petitioners. It was rightly brought to the fore – the bankruptcy of Indian National Congress, INC. It may be remembered that the Congress is and was a party of sycophants and adulators from the very beginning.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal and  Lala Lajpat Rai, were branded “extremists” for airing views of ‘Swaraj’ and were eventually expelled from the party in 1906. It was Jawahar Lal Nehru who in 1929 prevailed upon Gandhiji to declare “Poorna Swaraj” as the Party’s sole aim.

That means it took 33 years for the party to reconcile itself as an opponent of British rule in Irofessed and practiced by Nehru and moral values inculcated by Mahatma Gandhi prevailed for a short period only. Thus Congress as a political party remained a party of opportunists with brief spells of glory due to some exceptional leaders.

Tilak, Bose and their ilk were all forgotten long ago.

Those who were wise enough to realize that they can no longer rely upon the party to serve their self – interests are now joining the ranks of BJP. It takes time for those who are   still with Sonia Gandhi to get disillusioned.  The columnist’s concerns about survival of democracy in India in the wake of Congress’ dwindling prospects in the recent elections are well – founded.

Congress Party’s failure to put itself up as a constructive opposition at the national level is irrevocable unless some miracle occurs in Indian Polity. Let us hope the day when Congress dumps Sonia and the coterie  soon. Because unless these forces in the Congress are made powerless, the leaders like S.M. Krishna, Ashok Gehlot, Vilasarao Deshmukh and Digvijay Singh and the like can rejuvenate the party at the National level
